After Dinner Speaker : John Conteh
From the world of boxing, one of Britain's finest ever World Champions and a great sporting character.
Emerging from a large family in Liverpool, John was one of eleven children and to this day claims that his mother is the one person he could not have gone the distance with!
Showing early and precocious talent. John won the Commonwealth Games Gold Medal in 1970 and, in the same year, also won the A.B.A. Championship. John turned professional in 1971 and in three short years had achieved his pinnacle by winning the World Light Heavyweight Championship, defeating George Arumada at Wembley, in 1974.
He retired in 1980 after successfully defending his title on three occasions, with a fight record of 39 professional fights with only 5 defeats.
John now has carved out a successful career as a Show Business Personality and After Dinner Speaker. With many stage & TV. appearances as an actor, John also had a six month run in London's West End in fellow Scouser Willy Russell's smash hit play Blood Brothers.
