International Music - Latin: Alkasalsa
This UK-based 10-piece are building a reputation in a scene which until recently, has been dominated by imported acts.
In a complete reversal of usual trends, their debut CD, containing much original material, was broadcast on Cuban national radio - direct from the UK! Warmly praised by both Ruben Gonzalez and Ibrahim Ferrer (veteran stars of Buena Vista Social Club), Ruben described it as `Muy bonita y muy Cubana"!'
Last year Alkasalsa's lineup was further enhanced by the addition of Honduran-born sonero Ramón Vallejo: After extensive touring throughout the UK and Europe as former front man of Robin Jones' King Salsa. Alkasalsa perform a mix of original material - which faIls somewhere between Cuban son and hard salsa - and covers of merengue and cumbia to suit both the club scene and the wider festival audience alike.
They have just finished recording their second CD of original tracks by Jonny Nance and Ramón entitled `MANTENLA EN VIVO' which will be launched at the EDEN PROJECT in July.
